about

“20th Century’s” Fender Bass VI twang crosses cowboy with New Order. It’s a Vox AC-30 Tremolo spy groove that appears on Birds in stereo and mono versions.

LK: "I built the song around a tremolo part, with a vintage Fender Electric 12-string, and then came up with the main hook, which was a little solo part wielding my favorite guitar-The Fender Bass VI. There are a lot of analog synths on the song, and that repetitive drony keyboard was Jeff Calder's idea, for me to play a Clavinet through a Boss Phase Shifter. We wanted it to have an edgy spy feel to it, so adding the European police horns and marching boots at the end, really painted a picture. Tom Tapley mixed this track at Southern Tracks Recording in Atlanta, and did an excellent job balancing all of the guitars, string pads, vocals and ideas."

We liked the song so much, we decided to ask Greg "Fern" Quesnel to mix the song in Mono. Our Mastering Engineer, Rodney Mills, was working at a time in the 1960s when recording was far simpler, with only 3 or 4 tracks of information. After tweaking “20th Century” for a while, he raised an eyebrow and said, “Lisa, I’m not sure if you were thinking in mono when you did this song.”

lyrics

20th Century

I wish you were happy
I wish you were here
I wish you would love me to the door

I never thought I'd feel
The way I did before

20th Century's not the same anymore

Yesterday I woke up in the rain
Seems like everything's just the same

20th Century's not the same anymore

I wish you would love me
I wish you were here
