HOUSEHOLD GODS
"Tibetan Shortwave"

In our continuing archival series, we are proud to present “Tibetan Shortwave” by Household Gods; a live-to-air performance piece originally broadcast in 1984 on Sydney community radio station, 2MBS-FM 102.5. Featuring the work of Craig Livingston (radios) and Ian Andrews (tape loops, Korg MS20 synthesizer, digital delay, ring modulator, and mix), this almost half hour performance consists of gradual layers, giving the listener the experience of tuning in to some otherworldly shortwave radio broadcast, with bursts of sound, and voices snatched from the ether. The name Household Gods relates to a time before television, when listeners gathered around their radios for both entertainment, and news from the outside world. The center of the family home was the radio set.

“Tibetan Shortwave” was part of the third series of live, in-studio performances for the show, 3.9.1 cannibale aka Contemporary Editions (cntmprr-ydtns), presented by Alessio Cavallaro, from 1979-1989. 3.9.1. cannibale was a weekly program that specialized in experimental music and sound art. This release of Tibetan Shortwave is a new mix, edited together by Ian Andrews, from the master tapes used in the original broadcast.

Ian Andrews is a Sydney, Australia-based artist, who has been active over four decades, producing works in sound, film, video, sculpture, collage, poetry, and writing. His first sound experiments as Kurt Volentine, The Horse He’s Sick, Cut With The Kitchen Knife, Zeroville, and the group Cerebral Haemorrhage, were all cassettes released on his own Lymph Products label (1982-1988). Collaborative groups during this time included Household Gods, Battleship Potato, and Transmission Impossible, (Garry Bradbury and John Jacobs.)

During the 1990’s, he was a part of Video Subvertigo, creating video jamming with massive amounts of equipment, plus the political techno punk collectives Non Bossy Posse, and Organarchy Sound Systems, as well as his own projects, the drum and bass flavored Hypnoblob, and Disco Stu. Since the 2000’s, he has moved back into exploring collage, generative sound, and graphics, across a number of albums and installations.

Recent projects include Sanity Clause with longtime collaborator Garry Bradbury, (Severed Heads, 1982-1983; guest musician - 1984-1985), and astasie-abasie. The most recent astasie-abasie album “Molecular Gamelan” was released in 2021 on compact disc, through Shame File Music. Throughout the years, Ian’s video and film work has been showcased in many international film festivals, and he was artist in residence at Joya: arte + ecología / AiR in Spain, in 2014.
